Under 23s narrowly beaten

The YSPL under 23s side, captained by Barnsley's Dan Waldron, were narrowly beaten in their annual fixture against a strong MCC side at Abbeydale yesterday.
Batting first in a 45-over game, MCC were all out for 171, with Aston Hall's Matt Cartwright top scoring on 42. Waldron finished with 3 for 10 in his eight overs, Wickersley's Nathan Taylor took 3-32, and there also were a couple of wickets for Jack Wood of Whitley Hall.
In reply, the under 23s got off to a poor start and were 31-4 before a recovery, initiated by Jack Riley of Whitley Hall (26) and Barnsley wicket-keeper/batsman Beck Frostick (28), took the score up to 83. A further flurry of wickets then reduced our team to 109-8, before Whitley Hall's Sam Woodcock (31 not out) and Taylor (32 not out) took their side to within just five runs of the MCC total before the overs ran out.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable game, a very good effort against a strong MCC side, and several of our players can only have enhanced their reputations.
Our grateful thanks to Richard Ibbotson, Josh Varley and the Abbeydale Sports Club for their excelent hosting of the game; to organiser and scorer, Steve Ward; coach Chris Marples; and our umpire, Terry Bateman.
