Our congratulations to Wakefield Thornes who yesterday became the first YSPL side to win the Viking Cricket Yorkshire Leagues Knock-Out Cup in the first all-YSPL final. At a sun-drenched Elsecar ground in front of an excellent crowd, Thornes beat Whitley Hall by four wickets in the penultimate over of an enthralling contest.
The victorious team
Man-of-the-match Greg Wadsworth with Jeff Wilson of Viking Cricket
Whitley Hall batted first and Thornes' Matt Taylor struck two early blows to remove openers James Moorhouse and Matt Milburn. Mahmood Rasool then trapped skipper Greig Batty in front, and when Neil Longhurst was run out, Whitley Hall were 51-4 in the 12th over. Danial Rafiq and Jack Wood then added seventy runs for the fifth wicket, and James Brown and Matt Godden added fifty more in an unbroken ninth-wicket partnership – Brown ending unbeaten on 53 off 44 balls - to take Whitley Hall to 198-8.
In reply, Thornes’ James Wolfenden anchored the early part of the innings, and added 58 for the third wicket with Faisal Irfan. But when both were out in quick succession, Thornes subsided to 148-6 with only six overs to go. However, man-of-the-match Greg Wadsworth then took the game away from Whitley Hall, hitting an unbeaten 45 off 29 balls, skipper Tom Froggett joining him in a rapid 51 partnership that saw Thornes home with four wickets and eight balls to spare.
Sponsor Jeff Wilson of Viking Cricket presented Tom Froggett with the cup, and gave man-of-the-match Greg Wadsworth a pair each of Viking Cricket pads and gloves to go with his trophy.
Our grateful thanks go to Jim Beachill, Andy Ivill and all at Elsecar CC for brilliantly hosting the game; to organiser Steve Ward, and to Jeff Wilson of Viking Cricket for his most generous sponsorship.
